Azure Digital Twins: Revolutionising the retail supply chain

The pandemic has greatly disrupted the retail industry, with 82% of retailers changing their approach to how they manage their supply chains. Digital twin technology, such as Microsoft Azure’s Digital Twins, is one tool which retailers are adopting to address this issue. Digital twin technology allows retailers to model their supply chains as connected environments, enabling them to model everything from assets and warehouses to people and processes.
Digital twins are particularly helpful for simulating the performance of a retailer’s supply chain and identifying crucial points where optimisation is possible. The tool provides real-time visibility, which can help retailers implement new non-linear supply chain fulfilment models, such as micro-fulfilment. Using a digital twin also ensures critical information is available throughout the entire supply chain. According to Boston Consulting Group, retailers which have implemented digital twins have seen CAPEX reductions of up to 10%, sustainable inventory reductions of up to 5%, and EBITDA improvements of 1 to 3 percentage points.
