For the first time ever, Python soared past Java to land the number two ranking in the latest edition of the Tiobe Index of programming languages, while Java slipped to third place. The Tiobe Index has been around for almost 20 years and calculates language popularity based on search engine activity. C, Java and Python have consistently ranked in the top of three of the index, swapping places from time to time.
Some owe Python’s increased popularity to its use in fields such as AI and data mining, but Tiobe argues that the language’s growth is thanks to the general demand for software development. Being a simpler programming language, Python meets the needs of expert software engineers and is also easy enough for non-engineers to learn.
